Figural Pattern Folding

Figural Pattern Folding shows a sheet of paper folded once or twice with one or more holes punched, and asks you to pick the unfolded pattern. SSC Stenographer asks 1 such item per paper. The rule is symmetric duplication along each fold line. After this lesson you will visualise the unfolded sheet without drawing.

Each fold line acts as a mirror. Punches on the folded paper appear on both sides of the fold line when unfolded.

One fold + one hole = 2 holes (mirror across fold).
One fold + two holes = 4 holes (each mirrored).
Two folds + one hole = up to 4 holes — mirror first across fold-2, then mirror the resulting pair across fold-1.

Always mirror in reverse fold order: undo the last fold first.

Example 1. Fold paper once vertically, punch a hole near the top-left. Unfolded picture?

1. Fold = vertical line in middle.
2. Hole on left mirrors to right at same height.
3. Result: 2 holes, top-left and top-right.

Example 2. Fold once vertically, then once horizontally. Punch one hole. Unfolded?

1. Undo horizontal fold first → 2 holes top & bottom.
2. Undo vertical fold → mirror across vertical line → 4 holes at four corners.
3. Answer: 4 corners.

2. Single fold + multiple holes.
3. Double fold + single hole.
4. Diagonal fold — mirror across diagonal.
5. Cut-out (notched) instead of hole.
6. Reverse — given unfolded, find fold sequence.

1. Wrong fold order. Always undo last fold first.

2. Forgetting hole multiplication. 2 folds = 4 holes for one punch.

3. Miscounting positions. Mirror is exactly across the fold line.

4. Confusing diagonal mirror. Use perpendicular distance from fold line.

Why Figural Pattern Folding is small-pool scoring. SSC Stenographer 2026 asks 1 paper-folding item per paper. The variants are limited: (1) Single fold + single hole punch — predict the unfolded result. (2) Double fold + single punch — predict pattern after unfolding both folds. (3) Triple fold (rare) — predict full unfolding. (4) Fold + cut — predict cut-shape distribution after unfolding. Master the 4 standard fold scenarios and you cover 80% of past papers. The general method is reverse-step: start from the question's folded-and-cut figure and unfold one step backward at a time, mirroring the cut shape across the most recent fold line each time. For diagonal folds, the mirror image is across the diagonal axis — easy to miss. Practise 3 folds daily for 2 weeks. Cap each question at 35 seconds.

• Review with rough sketches if stuck.
• Single horizontal fold: punched hole reflects across the horizontal axis — mirror image up-down.
• Single vertical fold: punched hole reflects across the vertical axis — mirror image left-right.
• Diagonal fold: punched hole reflects across the diagonal — swap row and column of the hole.
• Two folds (one of each direction): punched hole appears at all four corner positions of the unfolded square.
• For paper-cutting questions, the cut shape unfolds symmetrically across the most recent fold line.
• Drill 50 PYQ paper-folding items including punch and cut variants.
• Always work backwards: start from the question's folded-and-punched figure and unfold one step at a time.
• At each unfold step, the punched holes mirror across the most recent fold line — nothing else changes.
• For folds that produce overlapping layers, the punch creates one hole per layer, all of which mirror together.
• For 'which option is correct' items, eliminate options that have wrong hole-count first; then check positions.
• For paper-cutting items, the cut is a 2D shape; reflect it across each fold to find its full unfolded form.
• SSC Stenographer 2026 typically asks 1 paper-folding item per paper — small but reliable scoring worth 1.5 marks.
• Practise tip: take real paper, fold and punch as the question describes, then unfold to verify your prediction; this physical practice locks the unfolding logic in 2 weeks.
• For 4-option items, count holes first — wrong-count options are the easiest to eliminate.
• For position questions, sketch the unfolded grid lightly on rough sheet and mark hole positions step by step.
• Common SSC trap: an option places holes correctly along one axis but reflects them wrongly along the other — always verify both axes.
